The Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum is a small museum inside St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, City of Westminster, London, preserving the laboratory in which the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, a discovery that transformed modern medicine and saved millions of lives. The little laboratory has been refurnished as it was that year, with its equipment, culture dishes and microscope, and the adjoining rooms tell the story of the discovery, the development of penicillin into a drug in the 1940s and its impact on the world, with a video and explanations by volunteers. St Mary's Hospital itself is a teaching hospital founded in 1845 and operated since 2008 by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust; its medical school was part of the University of London until it merged with Imperial College in 1988 and then with Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1997 to form Imperial College School of Medicine. The hospital is also known for its private Lindo Wing, where several members of the royal family were born. The museum is an ideal destination for anyone interested in the history of medicine and science, and for students, a few steps from Paddington station.
