Street in Baku, Azerbaijan
Baku Boulevard, officially the Seaside National Park, is a long promenade running parallel to the Caspian shore in the heart of the Azerbaijani capital. It was established in 1909, at a time when Baku's oil barons were building their mansions along the shore and the seafront was being reclaimed from the sea inch by inch, and for more than a century it has been the centre of public life in Baku and the city's favourite place for an evening or weekend stroll. The promenade now stretches for several kilometres from National Flag Square and the Carpet Museum to the Park Bulvar shopping centre and the Baku Eye ferris wheel, lined with trees, gardens and fountains and dotted with museums, cafes, restaurants, small funfairs for children and pleasure boats offering short trips around the bay, with views of the famous Flame Towers and the minarets of the Old City. At its newer ends lie the cruise terminal and the recently developed White Boulevard. According to Wikivoyage the Boulevard brings together museums, parks, cafes, restaurants and other attractions in a single walk, making it the ideal place to begin discovering Baku or to end the day with the family.
The best time to stroll is the late afternoon and evening, when the heat eases and the Flame Towers and seafront light up; in summer the Boulevard fills with families until late. Hire a bicycle or take the little train to cover the longer stretches, and do not miss a short boat trip around the bay or the Baku Eye for a panoramic view. Cafes are plentiful and mostly family-oriented, and the Bibi-Heybat Mosque at the western end and the mosques of the nearby Old City are convenient for prayer. Baku's winds are strong, so bring a jacket even in spring. Walk from Sahil or Icherisheher metro stations.
