Japanese garden in İstanbul, Turkey
The Baltalimani Japanese Garden is a garden devoted to Japanese heritage in the Baltalimani area of the Sariyer district on the European side of Istanbul, close to the Bosphorus shore. Work began in 2000 with the support of Shimonoseki, one of Istanbul's sister cities in Japan; the garden opened to the public in 2003 following the declaration of the Year of Turkey in Japan, and was renovated in 2010. It covers about 7,000 square metres in traditional Japanese design: a natural pond and a waterfall, wooden bridges linking the two sides of the pond, a lane of Japanese cherry trees, roses and rare flowers and plants widely used in Japan, and a tea house in Japanese style, with stone lanterns and gravel paths that invite calm and contemplation. The garden has become one of the much-loved landmarks of modern Istanbul and a peaceful place for families and photographs, at its finest in early spring when the cherry trees blossom.
Entry is free; the garden is open daily 08:00–19:00 in summer and 08:00–17:00 in winter. Come in late March and April for the cherry blossom season, and in the morning to avoid the crowds and get quiet photographs. The garden is small, so an hour is enough, and it combines well with nearby Emirgan Park and a stroll along the Bosphorus shore. Arrive by bus from Besiktas or Sariyer; parking is limited.
