Royal Air Force WWII operations room
The Battle of Britain Bunker is an underground operations room at RAF Uxbridge in west London, the headquarters of No. 11 Group Fighter Command during the Second World War. Fighter aircraft operations were controlled from here throughout the war, most notably during the Battle of Britain in 1940, when the Group defended London and south-east England, and on D-Day in 1944; it was here that Winston Churchill watched the battle unfold and coined his famous words about "the few" to whom so many owed so much. Today the bunker is run by Hillingdon Council as a heritage attraction with an attached museum, opened in 1985, with an above-ground visitor centre added in March 2018 presenting the history of the battle, its aircraft and pilots and the radar system. The bunker itself is reached down 76 steps, where visitors find the operations room as it was on the morning of 15 September 1940, with its great map table on which counters representing aircraft were moved and its illuminated status boards. The bunker lies not far from Uxbridge town centre and Uxbridge Underground station and is one of the most important Second World War sites open to the public in London.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) the site is open 10:30–16:30 and the bunker can be visited only on a guided tour booked through the official website, while the above-ground visitor centre is visited freely; check prices and times before going. Allow two hours; the long staircase makes the bunker unsuitable for wheelchairs, unlike the visitor centre. Take the Underground to Uxbridge (Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines) and walk about 15 minutes; Uxbridge has halal restaurants and the Uxbridge Mosque.
