Historic house museum in Brentford, London, UK
Boston Manor House is an English Jacobean manor house built in 1622 in Brentford, west London, with later internal alterations and intensive restoration in subsequent centuries. It was the manor house of one of the early medieval-founded manors of Middlesex, and since 1965 its small part of the parish of Hanwell has belonged to the London Borough of Hounslow. It was built for Sir William Reade and his wife Lady Mary Reade, and in 1670 was bought by the Clitherow family of City merchants, who lived there into the 20th century. The house is known for the magnificent decorative plaster ceilings of its first floor, above all in the State Drawing Room, among the finest surviving Jacobean ceilings in England, and for its carved fireplace, paintings and 17th- and 18th-century furniture; it reopened after a comprehensive restoration that returned it to its former splendour. It is surrounded by the extensive public Boston Manor Park, with its lake, ancient cedars and lawns sloping down towards the River Brent. Wikivoyage describes it as a pleasant and informative place to while away an hour or two, particularly in summer, when the open parkland behind the building makes for a delightful stroll, a quiet family destination away from the crowded centre.
The house is run by the council and normally opens on set days of the week with free entry, so check times on the Hounslow Council website before visiting; the park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Allow an hour for the house and another for the park and lake, and bring a picnic in summer. Boston Manor station (Piccadilly line) is a five-minute walk away, and the visit combines with Kew Gardens or the Musical Museum in Brentford; the halal restaurants of Southall are a short train ride away.
