Communications tower located in Fitzrovia, London, England, UK
The BT Tower is a famous communications tower in Fitzrovia in central London, begun in 1961 and completed in 1964. On completion it was known as the Museum Radio Tower after the neighbouring Museum telephone exchange, then became the Post Office Tower and the Telecom Tower as ownership changed, before gaining its current name in 1991; since 2024 it has been owned by MCR Hotels. Historic England designated it a Grade II listed building in 2003. The main structure is 177 metres high, and with its aerial rigging the total height reaches about 189–191 metres; on completion it was the tallest structure in London and remained so until 1980, and it is visible from far across the city. Butlins ran a revolving restaurant at the top from 1966 until 1980, and today a 360-degree LED screen displays news and messages across central London. The tower is not open to the public, according to Wikivoyage, but it is a visual landmark of the London skyline encountered from the streets of Fitzrovia, Bloomsbury and Regent's Park, and one of the emblems of 1960s London.
The tower is not open to visitors (Wikivoyage, 2026), so view and photograph it from the street; the best angles are from Cleveland Street and Fitzroy Square gardens, and at night when its rotating screens light up. The nearest stations are Warren Street and Goodge Street, and it can be included in a Bloomsbury and British Museum walk. Halal restaurants are plentiful on and around Tottenham Court Road, and the London Central Mosque in Regent's Park is a 20-minute walk away.
