Baku, Azerbaijan
A mosque and historical architectural monument located in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Chin Mosque, also known as the Gazi Fezlullah bin Osman Mosque, is a historic former mosque of the 14th century in the Old City of Baku, standing on Kichik Gala Street near the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Aliagha Vahid garden. It was built in 1375 according to Wikivoyage, in the era of the Shirvanshahs, and was registered as a national architectural monument by decision No. 132 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 2 August 2001. No longer operating as a mosque, the building was repurposed in 2012 as a numismatic museum forming part of the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan. In its small domed stone hall it displays coins and currency from the many eras that passed over Azerbaijan, from Arab-Islamic dirhams to the coinage of the Shirvanshahs and the khanates and up to modern times. The place combines the simple limestone architecture of Shirvan mosques with the monetary history of the region, and makes a short, interesting stop on a tour of the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a few steps from the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.
The building is now a coin museum, so check its opening hours and ticket price on arrival or through the National Museum of History; 20 to 30 minutes is enough. Combine it with the neighbouring Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Haji Heybat Mosque on the same street, and pray at the nearby Juma or Muhammad mosques. Walk five minutes from Icherisheher metro station.
