Church in Jerusalem
The Church of the Pater Noster, historically the Sanctuary of the Eleona, is a Catholic church on the Mount of Olives in Al-Quds, part of a monastery of cloistered Carmelite nuns. It stands over a grotto where, according to Christian tradition, Jesus taught his disciples the Lord's Prayer, the "Our Father" that gives the church its Latin name. Beside the modern church lie the ruins of the fourth-century Byzantine Church of the Eleona, built in the age of Constantine, rediscovered in the twentieth century and partly rebuilt. What most visitors come for, however, are the glazed tile panels that line the cloister and passages, each inscribed with the Lord's Prayer in a different language; there are now more than 130 of them, Arabic among them. The grounds are quiet and shaded, a restful stop on the chain of Mount of Olives shrines between the Chapel of the Ascension above and Dominus Flevit and the Garden of Gethsemane below.
Open Monday to Saturday 09:00–11:30 and 15:00–17:00, closed on Sunday; admission ILS 10 for adults and 8 for students (per Wikivoyage, 2026). Allow half an hour to read the prayer panels and hunt for your own language. The site is calm and good for families, though paths are stone-paved; dress modestly. The Seven Arches Hotel and the famous Mount of Olives viewpoint are a few minutes' walk away.
