Historical urban park in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, Turkey
Emirgan Park (Emirgan Korusu) is a historic park and one of the largest public parks in Istanbul, in the Emirgan neighbourhood of the Sariyer district on the European shore of the Bosphorus, on a gentle hill overlooking the neighbourhood and the strait. It covers about 470,000 square metres within high walls and holds more than 120 species of trees and rare plants, with artificial ponds, small waterfalls, shaded paths and areas for picnics and jogging. For decades the park was the only place in the city where Istanbulites could admire tulips, and it remains the heart of the annual Tulip Festival in April, when millions of blooms open in dazzling designs, even though tulips are now planted all over the city. The park contains three historic wooden pavilions, the Yellow, White and Pink, once hunting and guest lodges of Khedive Ismail Pasha of Egypt, which today house cafes and restaurants with open-air sections. It is a quiet refuge for families away from the crowds of a metropolis of more than 15 million, with squirrels in the branches for those who look, and from its heights there are splendid views over the Bosphorus and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.
Entry is free and the park is open through the day. It is loveliest in April during the Tulip Festival, but expect heavy weekend crowds; weekday mornings are quietest. Bring a picnic or sit in the Yellow or Pink Pavilion cafe for a Turkish breakfast with a view. Paths are steep in places and not suited to every pushchair. Arrive by bus from Besiktas or Kabatas or by ferry to Emirgan; the neighbourhood has well-known restaurants on the waterfront and the historic Emirgan Mosque by the shore.
