Building in Southwark, London, formerly the headquarters of the Greater London Authority
The former City Hall, officially 110 The Queen's Walk, is a striking glass building on the south bank of the Thames in Bermondsey near Tower Bridge that served as the headquarters of the Greater London Authority, the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, between July 2002 and December 2021. Designed by Norman Foster as a leaning, rounded ten-storey form 45 metres high intended to minimise energy use, it was likened by Londoners to a helmet or an egg, and inside a spiral ramp winds around the assembly chamber. The building forms part of the More London development, and the site has been owned by the State of Kuwait since 2013. In June 2020 the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, proposed relocating the GLA to The Crystal, a GLA-owned building in Newham in east London near the cable car; the decision was confirmed on 3 November 2020 and the authority vacated the building on 2 December 2021. According to Wikipedia it is now undergoing partial demolition and reconstruction, and it is closed to the public and can be seen only from outside. With its unusual shape the building remains part of the famous South Bank scene alongside Tower Bridge and the Tower of London opposite, surrounded by the open plazas of More London with their views and restaurants.
The building is closed and viewed from outside only (Wikivoyage, 2026), and construction works may partly obscure it. The best thing about it is the riverside walk in front with its famous view of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, loveliest for photographs at sunset and in the evening when the bridge is lit. Combine it with Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast and Borough Market on a South Bank walk; the nearest station is London Bridge. Restaurants abound in More London and Borough Market, with halal options, and the East London Mosque in Whitechapel is a short Underground ride away for prayer.
