Fountains Square (Fəvvarələr meydanı) is one of the first central squares of Baku and the beating heart of downtown, located in the Sabail district at the junction of Nigar Rafibeyli and Ahmad Javad streets. Formerly called Parapet, a name many Baku residents still use, it takes its present name from the dozens of fountains built here during Soviet rule, with a fountain complex at its centre. The square became a broad green garden after a restoration in 1950 and was completely renovated in 2010. It is surrounded by architectural monuments of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the Nizami Ganjavi National Museum of Azerbaijani Literature, the Araz cinema building, the Yasr Plaza hotel and the old Armenian church of St Gregory. The square starts from Istiglaliyyat Street and the walls of the Old City (Icheri Sheher) and stretches along Nizami Street, popularly known as Torgovaya, which runs parallel to Baku Boulevard. It is the city's main public gathering place after business hours and at weekends, lined with boutiques, restaurants, shops, hotels and arcades, and the venue where the Baku authorities hold public festivals, shows and celebrations; a "Fountains Square" salad is even named after it.
