One of the Royal Parks of London
The Green Park is one of the Royal Parks of London, in the City of Westminster in the centre of the capital, covering 19 hectares (47 acres) north of the gardens and semi-circular forecourt of Buckingham Palace across Constitution Hill. It forms a link in a near-continuous chain of green spaces that includes St James's Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, stretching from Whitehall and Victoria station to Kensington and Notting Hill. It is bounded by Piccadilly to the north and the Queen's Walk to the east, and to the north-east lies the district of St James's with Lancaster House, Clarence House and St James's Palace. First enclosed by King Charles II in the 17th century and landscaped in 1820, it is notable among central London parks for having no lakes or buildings and only minimal planting in the form of naturalised narcissi in spring, consisting simply of mature trees and open grass, with few monuments beyond the Canada Memorial, the Constance Fountain and the Bomber Command Memorial at its edge. Its southern end meets St James's Park at the Victoria Memorial opposite the gates of Buckingham Palace. Wikivoyage notes that it can seem a little plain compared with the neighbouring Royal Parks, yet it is a pleasant, lightly wooded green space in the centre of London, and Green Park station at its northern tip is a major interchange of the Piccadilly, Victoria and Jubilee lines.
The park is open daily and free and is the most pleasant route from Piccadilly to Buckingham Palace for the Changing of the Guard, crossed along the Queen's Walk in ten minutes. In summer the green striped deckchairs are hired for a fee while sitting on the grass is free, and in spring daffodils cover its slopes. There are no large cafes inside, only kiosks at the entrances, and halal restaurants are plentiful on Piccadilly and around Shepherd Market. Combine it with St James's Park and Hyde Park in one walk; the London Central Mosque is the nearest option for prayer by Underground.
