Royal Park and former hunting park in Greenwich, London
Greenwich Park is a former royal hunting park and one of the largest single green spaces in south-east London, one of the eight Royal Parks and the first to be enclosed, in 1433. It covers 74 hectares (180 acres) and forms part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park surrounds the hilltop Royal Observatory, opened in 1676, and straddles the Greenwich Prime Meridian; from its summit it commands a famous elevated view over the River Thames, the towers of Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs and the City of London, with the Queen's House, the Old Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum below. Open year-round, the park incorporates flower gardens and grassy spaces, a children's playground, cafes, a bandstand, a boating lake, a pond, wooded areas and a wildlife habitat called The Wilderness where a herd of deer lives, as well as Roman and Anglo-Saxon remains. It is listed Grade I on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, and since 2020 a project has been restoring its historic features and adding new visitor facilities, a learning centre and improved access for disabled visitors. The park hosted the equestrian events of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and gathers the runners before the start of the annual London Marathon.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) the park is open from 6:00 until sunset and entry is free. Climb the hill to the General Wolfe statue in front of the Observatory for the most famous panoramic view of London, best before sunset. Combine it with the Royal Observatory (ticketed), the free National Maritime Museum and Queen's House and Greenwich Market. Arrive by DLR to Cutty Sark, by train to Greenwich or by riverboat from central London, the most beautiful route. Greenwich has halal restaurants, and the Greenwich Islamic Centre mosque is a short way off.
