Bridge in London, England, UK
Kew Bridge is a wide-span stone bridge over the Tideway, the tidal upper estuary of the Thames, linking the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Hounslow in west London and connecting Brentford and Chiswick on the north bank with Kew on the south. The present bridge, the third on the site, was opened in 1903 as King Edward VII Bridge by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra; it was designed by the engineers John Wolfe-Barry, designer of Tower Bridge, and Cuthbert Arthur Brereton, built of granite with three broad, elegant arches, and Historic England listed it at Grade II in 1983. Wikivoyage calls it a fine stone bridge, and it is one of the most attractive river crossings in west London for visitors to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew on its southern bank; from the bridge the view takes in the bend of the river, the trees of Kew and Brentford Ait island, while on the north bank rises the Victorian tower of the Kew Bridge waterworks, now the London Museum of Water & Steam, beside Kew Bridge railway station. The bridge is a natural stop on a walk along the Thames Path between Chiswick and Richmond, and in summer river cruise boats depart from here to Hampton Court and Westminster.
The bridge is a public road open at all times; the best view is from the riverside path at Kew Green to the south-west at sunset, or from the north bank with the waterworks tower. Walk across from Kew Bridge station (trains from Waterloo) to the Kew Green gate of Kew Gardens in ten minutes, or combine it with the London Museum of Water & Steam in Brentford. Kew Green has cafes and restaurants, and Brentford and Hounslow have many halal restaurants and mosques, including the Hounslow Jamia Mosque a short bus ride away.
