Mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan
The Khanlar Mosque is a former mosque and historical architectural monument in the Old City of Baku (Icheri Sheher), standing on Firdousi Street among the old stone houses. It was completed at the end of the 19th century, during Baku's oil boom, when the city's wealthy financed mosques in their neighbourhoods, and it was designated a nationally significant immovable historical and cultural monument by decision No. 132 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 2 August 2001. After the Red Army entered Azerbaijan in 1920 the mosque ceased its religious activities, as did most of the city's mosques under Soviet rule, and the building was turned to residential use; it is still used as a dwelling today, so it cannot be visited inside, although its stone facade and architectural details remain visible to anyone walking down the lane. The mosque illustrates the fate of many of Baku's old mosques that lost their religious function in the 20th century, and makes a quick stop for history lovers on a tour of Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The building is a private residence and cannot be entered, so view the facade quietly from Firdousi Street, respect the residents' privacy and avoid photographing the windows at close range. Include it in a walking tour of the Old City with the nearby Khidir and Haji Heybat mosques, and go to the Juma Mosque or the Muhammad Mosque for prayer. Walk about ten minutes from Icherisheher metro station.
