City park in İstanbul, Turkey
Macka Park, officially Macka Democracy Park, is a large green recreation area in the heart of Istanbul's European side, occupying both sides of a valley between the Nisantasi, Macka and Besiktas neighbourhoods in this "city of seven hills", with a main avenue running along the bottom crossed by a wooden footbridge that links the two halves of the park. The park has paths for jogging and walking, playgrounds and children's areas, rest areas with benches and decorative pools, and wide lawns where young people and families gather, with small cafes; it is among the most popular parks in the city with residents of the surrounding districts in the late afternoon and at weekends. Its best-known feature is the gondola lift strung across the valley between the Macka station at the northern end and the Tasvikiye station near Taksim Square, with cabins for four, a fun shortcut for anyone walking between Besiktas and Taksim, with fine views of the Bosphorus, and one of the small pleasures of Istanbul for children.
Entry is free and the park is open all day. The gondola runs every five minutes from 08:00 to 20:00 for a token fare paid with the Istanbulkart (per Wikivoyage). Reach it on foot from Osmanbey or Taksim metro stations, or uphill from Besiktas. Late afternoon is the nicest time, and in spring the lawns fill with families, so bring a mat and food. Playgrounds make it good for children, and the restaurants and cafes of Nisantasi are close by.
