Concert hall in Baku
The Muslim Magomayev Azerbaijan State Academic Philharmonic Hall is Baku's oldest concert hall and one of the city's loveliest buildings from the first oil boom. It was built between 1910 and 1912 to a design by the architect Gabriel Ter-Mikelov in a style inspired by the famous Monte Carlo building, with ornate white facades, a dome and terraces overlooking the Philharmonic Garden at the foot of the Old City walls. On 11 August 1937 the hall was named, by decision of the Council of People's Commissars, after the great Azerbaijani composer Muslim Magomayev, grandfather of the celebrated singer of the same name. The hall is home to the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles of classical and traditional Azerbaijani music, and hosts orchestral concerts, mugham and folk performers and international festivals throughout the year; the pianist Murad Adigozalzade has been its director since 2006. Even for those not attending a concert, the building is worth a pause on a walk from Fountains Square to the Boulevard through the Philharmonic Garden, being one of Baku's most photographed buildings, especially when lit at night.
Check the concert programme on the Philharmonic's official website; tickets are relatively inexpensive and sold at the box office or online, and traditional Azerbaijani music and mugham concerts suit families and need no strict formal dress. The best time to photograph the facade is late afternoon from the neighbouring Philharmonic Garden. The hall is a few steps from Icherisheher metro station and the Old City gate, and the Juma Mosque in the Old City is the nearest place for prayer.
