Merdeka 118, officially known as Merdeka Maybank Tower, and formerly known as Menara Warisan Merdeka, KL 118, and PNB 118, is a 118-story supertall skyscraper in the Merdeka Precinct, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At 678.9 metres tall, it is the second tallest building in the world. The structure was completed in November 2023, celebrating its grand opening on 10 January 2024, but the building was not opened to the public as scheduled. Finally, on 7 August 2025, the Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur Hotel began operation on levels 75 to 112. The rest of the project remains far behind schedule as of 1 July 2026, still under construction with most areas closed to the public.
Merdeka 118, officially renamed Merdeka Maybank Tower on 30 July 2026, is a 118-storey megatall skyscraper in the Merdeka Precinct of Kuala Lumpur. At 678.9 metres above ground (700.9 metres above sea level) it is the second-tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (829.8 m), the tallest in Malaysia, surpassing the Petronas Twin Towers (451.9 m), and the tallest in Southeast Asia, ahead of Landmark 81 in Vietnam. Its spire was completed in December 2022, construction finished in November 2023 and the grand opening was celebrated on 10 January 2024. The tower takes its name from its proximity to Stadium Merdeka, where Malaysia's independence was proclaimed in 1957, "merdeka" meaning independence in Malay, and its faceted glass form is said to echo the raised hand of Tunku Abdul Rahman as he shouted "Merdeka". It was financed by the government-owned fund manager Permodalan Nasional Berhad and is the first building in Malaysia to receive a triple platinum sustainability rating, including LEED. The tower holds offices and the Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur hotel, which began operating on 7 August 2025 on levels 75 to 112, with an observation deck at the top and a mall at the base still being completed; according to Wikipedia, as of 1 July 2026 most of the project remained behind schedule and closed to the public, so check its opening status before visiting.
First check whether the observation deck and the mall have opened to the public, as they remained closed as of mid-2026 according to Wikipedia; until then the tower is admired from outside, with the best photo angles from the neighbouring Stadium Merdeka and Al-Bukhari Mosque, especially after sunset when the facades are lit. Take the MRT or monorail to Merdeka or Hang Tuah station; the Al-Bukhari Foundation Mosque is a few steps away for prayer, and the halal eateries of Petaling Street are close by.
