Catholic church building
The Church of the Flagellation is a Catholic church and Christian pilgrimage site in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Al-Quds, near Lions' Gate (Bab al-Asbat). It belongs to a Franciscan monastery that also contains the Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross, and the monastery marks the traditional Second Station of the Cross on the Via Dolorosa. Christian tradition holds this to be the place where Roman soldiers flogged Jesus before his crucifixion, which gives the church its name. Across the courtyard stands the Chapel of the Condemnation, on the site popularly identified with the trial of Jesus before Pontius Pilate. The present complex was built over the remains of older structures. The monastery courtyard is a quiet refuge in one of the busiest lanes of the Old City, and the usual starting point for anyone walking the Via Dolorosa from Lions' Gate to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Open daily 07:00–18:00 from April to September and 07:00–17:00 from October to March; admission is free. Early morning is best, before pilgrim groups fill the Via Dolorosa, especially on Fridays. A quarter of an hour covers both chapels and the courtyard. Dress modestly. The surrounding Muslim Quarter is full of sweet shops and simple local restaurants.
