Casablanca, Morocco

Shopping mall
Morocco Mall is the largest shopping centre in Morocco and one of the biggest in Africa, on the Casablanca corniche at the far south-west of the city, beyond Ain Diab and Anfa. Built over four years from 2007 and opened in December 2011 at a cost of about two billion dirhams, it was designed by the architect Davide Padoa of London-based Design International. It holds hundreds of international and Moroccan brands, restaurants and cafés, a large supermarket, a cinema and children's play areas. Its best-known feature is Aquadream, a huge cylindrical aquarium holding a million litres and more than forty species of fish, with a lift running up its centre for a 360-degree view of the marine life; visitors can even dive in it with an instructor. In front of the mall is a large musical fountain with water and light shows, and in 2012 the mall won design awards, including the MAPIC award in Cannes for best shopping centre architecture.
It is a comfortable, air-conditioned place for shopping and family fun, especially on hot or rainy days. Allow two hours or more. Weekends are busy. Combine it with a walk on the nearby Ain Diab corniche and a visit to the Hassan II Mosque. Get there by taxi, or by tram and bus.
