Mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan
The Mirza Ahmed Mosque is a medieval former mosque in the Old City of Baku (Icheri Sheher), standing on Mirza Alakbar Sabir Street in a row with old residential buildings. It was completed in 1345 by Haji Mirza Ahmed, whose name it bears, in the era of the Shirvanshahs who built most of the Old City's monuments, and belongs to the group of small 14th-century neighbourhood mosques such as the nearby Khidir Mosque. Arabic Wikipedia notes that it is also known as the Haji Sultanali Mosque. The building is small, made of local limestone, and distinguished from the neighbouring houses only by its doorway and old windows; it is an example of the modest mosques that served each quarter of the walled city and is no longer in regular use for worship. It lies in the historic core of the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors come across it while wandering between the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and it makes a brief stop for those tracing the layers of Baku's Islamic history.
The mosque is seen from outside on an Old City walk and may not be open; look at its doorway and inscriptions and continue to the major monuments nearby. For prayer, head to the Juma Mosque or the Muhammad Mosque in the Old City. The lanes are quiet in the early morning and best for photographs; walk about ten minutes from Icherisheher metro station.
