Аrt museum in Baku
The Azerbaijan National Museum of Art is the country's largest art museum, founded in 1936 in Baku and named in 1943 after Rustam Mustafayev, the prominent Azerbaijani scenic designer and theatre artist. It occupies two adjacent 19th-century historic buildings near the Philharmonic Garden and the Old City walls, one the grand de Bur mansion and the other a building of 1885. Its collection numbers more than 15,000 works, of which over 3,000 are on permanent display in 60 rooms while some 12,000 are kept in storage, with displays rotated periodically. The first building shows European art in seven rooms, with works by Italian, French, Dutch and Flemish, German and Polish painters, and Russian art in ten rooms, including restored examples of the Russian avant-garde. The second building is devoted to Eastern art, particularly Persian, Turkish, Chinese and Japanese, together with Azerbaijani art: easel and book miniatures of the 17th to 19th centuries, lacquered miniatures of the 18th and 19th centuries, a collection of sherbet spoons carved from mulberry wood, carpets, ceramics and metalwork. The museum is one of the most important places to discover classical and modern Azerbaijani art, and combines easily with the neighbouring Philharmonic Hall and the Old City.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00 and closed Monday; check the official website for the ticket price and temporary exhibitions. Allow two hours for both buildings, starting with the Eastern and Azerbaijani art building if time is short. The museum is air-conditioned and family-friendly, a few steps from Icherisheher metro station and the Philharmonic Garden, and the Juma Mosque in the Old City is the nearest place for prayer.
