Neighborhood
Nişantaşı is an upmarket residential quarter in the Şişli district on the European side of Istanbul and one of the city's best-known districts for high-end shopping. It comprises four neighbourhoods, Teşvikiye, Maçka, Osmanbey and Pangaltı, centred on Teşvikiye, which Vali Konağı and Rumeli avenues separate from Osmanbey to the west, while the busy Halaskargazi Avenue divides Osmanbey from Pangaltı further west; Maçka lies immediately to the south. Many streets are still lined with fine 19th- and early 20th-century apartment blocks, several of them Art Nouveau, whose ground floors house fashion boutiques, department stores, cafes and upmarket restaurants. The large, wooded Maçka Park lies directly to the south and the Beşiktaş district to the east, making the quarter central and easy to reach, close to Taksim Square and the Bosphorus. Nişantaşı forms the backdrop to several novels by the Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk, a long-time resident, and the journalist Ece Temelkuran has compared it to Greenwich Village in Manhattan. The nearest metro station to the heart of the quarter is Osmanbey on the M2 line; buses and dolmuş minibuses along Halaskargazi Avenue link it with Taksim and Mecidiyeköy, and the Beşiktaş ferries are within walking distance.
The quarter is best for luxury shopping and a relaxed late-afternoon stroll followed by tea or coffee in one of its elegant cafes; Abdi İpekçi Street is Istanbul's most expensive stretch of international brands, while the side streets of Teşvikiye are quieter and gentler on the budget. Rest in wooded Maçka Park with children, and the graceful Teşvikiye Mosque in the centre of the quarter is convenient for prayer. Take the M2 metro to Osmanbey and walk five minutes. Restaurants are plentiful but priced for the neighbourhood, so check menus first.
