Art museum in İstanbul, Turkey
The Pera Museum is a private art museum in the Tepebaşı quarter of Beyoğlu, the district once known as Pera, at Meşrutiyet Avenue 65 next to İstiklal Avenue and a short walk from Taksim Square. It opened in 2005 in the restored late-19th-century Bristol Hotel building and is run by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation. Its best-known holding is a collection of 19th-century Orientalist paintings, European artists' views of Ottoman life and cities, including works by Osman Hamdi Bey, among them The Tortoise Trainer, perhaps the most famous painting in Turkish art. Two further permanent collections show colourful Kütahya tiles and ceramics, and an unusual set of Anatolian weights and measures used since antiquity. The upper floors host changing exhibitions by Turkish and international artists, and the building also has a small cinema with classic and independent film programmes, a library, shop and café. Its central position makes it an easy stop on a walk along İstiklal Avenue.
According to Wikivoyage the museum opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–19:00 and Sunday 12:00–18:00, is closed on Mondays, and is free on Friday evenings 18:00–22:00 and for students on Wednesdays; ticket prices change often, so check the museum website before you go. Allow 60–90 minutes; there is a lift and the building is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Family restaurants serving Turkish food line nearby İstiklal Avenue, and neighbourhood mosques are a short walk from Taksim.
