Square in Tunis, Tunisia
Place de la Victoire is one of the best-known squares in Tunis, the meeting point of the medina and the modern city. Bab el Bhar stands in its centre, and many streets end here: Rue Mongi Slim, Rue Bab Jazira, Rue de la Commission, Rue Jamaa Zitouna, Rue de la Kasbah and Avenue de France, making it the natural gateway into the medina's souqs. It is lively all day, ringed with shops and cafés, and an ornate building on the square long housed the British embassy before it moved in recent years. In 1925, under the French protectorate, a statue of Cardinal Lavigerie was put up here; it was removed straight after independence, and the square, named Victory Square, became a symbol of Tunisian independence. From here Rue Jamaa Zitouna climbs between covered shops full of crafts, gifts, chechia caps and pottery up to the Great Mosque.
Use the square as the start and end of your medina walk; it is an easy stroll from Avenue Habib Bourguiba. Morning and late afternoon are best. It is crowded, so watch your belongings and politely decline unofficial guides. Have a tea at one of the cafés and watch the city go by.
