Museum in Sarıyer, Turkey
The Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum is a private fine-arts museum in the Emirgan quarter of Sarıyer, on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, housed in the Atlı Köşk ("Mansion with the Horse"), an early 20th-century summer residence once home to the Sabancı family. Founded by the industrialist Sakıp Sabancı and opened in June 2002, it is dedicated to Arabic and Ottoman calligraphy, religious and state documents, and paintings of the Ottoman era. The permanent collection includes rare Qur'ans, manuscripts and calligraphic panels from the 14th to the 20th century, imperial decrees and diplomas, calligraphers' tools, and a collection of Turkish and European paintings of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alongside the permanent displays the museum hosts major national and international temporary exhibitions, which brought it worldwide attention with shows of Picasso and Rodin, and it organises cultural events at weekends. The mansion stands in a garden overlooking the Bosphorus with a cafe and restaurant, a few steps from the Emirgan waterfront and its historic mosque, so it combines easily with a stroll along the strait.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) the museum is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday 10:00–18:00 and Wednesday and Saturday 10:00–22:00, closed Monday; check the official website for current prices and for temporary exhibitions that may need booking. Allow two hours; the calligraphy collection alone rewards lovers of Islamic art. Arrive by bus along the Bosphorus road to Emirgan or by city ferry, and round off the day with the nearby Rumeli Fortress.
