Protected area in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Vrelo Bosne, the Spring of the Bosna, is a public park and protected nature monument in Ilidža, on the edge of Sarajevo at the foot of Mount Igman. Here the Bosna river rises from a network of springs at about 500 metres above sea level, gathering into small clear lakes and streams crossed by wooden bridges under tall trees. It is one of the best-loved natural landmarks in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ducks and swans paddle on the pools, and it is a peaceful escape from the city, popular with families at weekends; the national football team sometimes holds training camps here. On the way from Ilidža runs the Velika Aleja, a long straight avenue shaded by plane and chestnut trees, which visitors cover on foot, by bike or in horse-drawn carriages. Not far from the springs, on the Bosna, stands the Roman Bridge, built between 1530 and 1550 from the stones of an earlier Roman bridge on the same spot.
Take the tram to Ilidža, then walk the Velika Aleja (about an hour), or hire a bike or a horse-drawn carriage; the journey is part of the fun. Allow half a day. There is a small entry fee for the park. Spring and autumn are loveliest, and summer is cooler than the city. Bring a jacket: it is chilly by the water.
