Art museum on Millbank, Westminster, London, UK
Tate Britain is the national museum of British art, standing on the Thames at Millbank in the City of Westminster, a short walk south of the Houses of Parliament. It opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art, funded by the sugar merchant Sir Henry Tate, who also gave his own collection; known as the Tate Gallery until 2000, it was then renamed as the parent of a family that includes Tate Modern in London, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. The museum holds the world's largest collection of British art from Tudor times to the present, displayed as a chronological walk through the centuries: 17th- and 18th-century portraits, Hogarth, Gainsborough and Constable, the celebrated Pre-Raphaelites, and 20th-century and contemporary work. Its greatest treasure is the Clore Gallery devoted to J. M. W. Turner, who bequeathed his entire collection to the nation, with his famous seascapes and studies of light. Temporary exhibitions are varied, the best known being the Turner Prize show for contemporary art, which Tate Britain hosts every few years. In 2021 it ranked 50th among the world's most-visited art museums.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) the gallery opens daily 10:00–17:50; the permanent collection is free and temporary exhibitions are charged. It is far quieter than Tate Modern, suits families, runs children's activities in school holidays and has lifts and ramps for strollers and wheelchairs. Allow two hours, and head for the Turner wing if time is short. The nearest Underground station is Pimlico (about 8 minutes' walk), and a river boat links it to Tate Modern. There is a café on site, and nearby Victoria has a range of halal options.
