Modern art gallery located in Bankside, London, England
Tate Modern holds the United Kingdom's national collection of international modern and contemporary art from 1900 onwards and is one of the largest museums of its kind in the world. It occupies the former Bankside Power Station on the south bank of the Thames in Southwark, facing St Paul's Cathedral across the Millennium footbridge. It opened in 2000, and the ten-storey Blavatnik Building rising behind the old power station was added in 2016. The building's signature space is the vast Turbine Hall, which each year hosts a single large work commissioned for it. The permanent collection on the upper floors is arranged by theme rather than date and includes Picasso, Matisse, Dalí, Warhol and Rothko alongside artists from every continent, video work and contemporary installations. The tenth floor of the Blavatnik Building has a free viewing terrace over the Thames, the dome of St Paul's and the City skyline. In 2025 the gallery drew more than 4.5 million visitors, making it the fourth most popular attraction and the most visited art gallery in the United Kingdom. As at Britain's other national museums, the collection displays are free while the major temporary exhibitions are ticketed.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) it opens daily 10:00–18:00 (last admission 17:15), staying open until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; the collection is free, donations welcome. The building is huge, so pick two or three floors rather than trying to see everything, and allow two hours to half a day. It is very family- and wheelchair-friendly with large lifts; some contemporary works carry content warnings, so read the room signs with children. The nearest station is Blackfriars (about 500 m); combine with a South Bank walk towards London Bridge or cross the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's. There are cafés and a restaurant inside, and nearby Borough Market has halal food stalls, so ask the…
