Twickenham Stoop, usually just 'the Stoop', is a rugby stadium in the suburb of Twickenham in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, south-west London, a short walk from the great national Twickenham Stadium across the road. It is the home ground of Harlequins, one of England's oldest and best-known rugby clubs, who play in Premiership Rugby, the top tier of the English game, and regularly qualify for European competition. With a capacity of about 14,800 it is far smaller and more intimate than its neighbour. The ground is named after Adrian Stoop, the Harlequins and England star of the early 20th century who is regarded as a founder of the modern attacking style of rugby. It was developed on land the club bought in 1963 after decades as tenants of the national stadium next door, and its stands have been expanded step by step into a complete modern ground. The Stoop is the local face of rugby in London: Harlequins' weekend fixtures between September and May draw a friendly, family crowd at prices well below international matches, and a visit pairs easily with the World Rugby Museum at the national stadium opposite.
