Largest public park in Kuwait City, first phase open in 2015
Al Shaheed Park is the largest urban park in Kuwait, on the edge of Kuwait City in the capital governorate, covering about 78 acres. Once known as the Green Belt park, it was demolished and completely redesigned; its first phase opened on 4 March 2015, the second on 12 April 2017, and further phases are under way. Part of the Kuwait National Cultural District, it is the country's most significant green infrastructure project and has one of the world's largest green roofs built over structures. The park is a cultural complex of contemporary architecture and artworks: botanical gardens of Kuwait's native plants, walking and jogging paths, lakes and fountains, open-air theatres for events, a skate park and a youth centre, along with the Constitution Monument and Peace Square. It has two museums: the Habitat Museum, on Kuwait's natural environment and wildlife, and the Memorial Museum, which tells the story of Kuwait's key historic battles, such as Al Riqqa, Al Sarif and Al Jahra, and the sacrifices of its people, the martyrs (shaheed) in whose honour the park is named.
Early morning or late afternoon into evening is best, especially from October to April; in summer go in the evening. The park is free, while the museums may need tickets. On weekends pop-up markets with small Kuwaiti businesses sometimes appear. It is very family-friendly, with plenty of shade.
