Kuwait City, Kuwait
Green Island is an artificial island off Kuwait City's Arabian Gulf Street shore near the Kuwait Towers, built by the Touristic Enterprises Company and opened in 1988 as the first artificial island in the Gulf. It covers about 785,000 square metres of sea, is roughly half a kilometre across and about 3.1 km around, and is linked to the mainland by a 134-metre causeway. It is a seaside park for families, with lawns and picnic areas, a 35-metre lookout tower, a children's play castle with moats and small waterfalls, a small round hill wrapped by a spiral path, and restaurants and services in an amphitheatre-shaped building. Its shoreline offers wide views of the Kuwait City skyline. In 2023 Kuwait launched the Green Island Season to mark the 62nd National Day and 32nd Liberation Day, opening on 12 February 2023 with restaurants, cafés, games and entertainment, including one of the largest drone shows in Kuwait's history, with 2,000 drones depicting the country's past, present and future.
Late afternoon and evening are best, especially in winter and spring. It suits families and children, with places to sit and picnic. Check seasonal events and any entry fee, which vary by season. Combine it with the Kuwait Towers and a walk along Arabian Gulf Street.
