The As Syakirin Mosque, also known as KLCC Mosque, is a mosque located in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The mosque is situated near the Suria KLCC shopping centre and the Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world.
The As Syakirin Mosque, also known as the KLCC Mosque, is a mosque of modern Islamic architecture in KLCC Park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, a few steps from the Petronas Twin Towers and the Suria KLCC shopping centre. It was first registered on 12 July 1999 as a prayer hall for Petronas staff, then granted mosque status under the administration of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council; its name means "the grateful ones". It is described as the jewel of the park for its strategic position facing it, and as an Islamic architectural landmark in the fastest-developing part of the capital. The mosque is distinguished by its columns with pyramidal tops and its steel-blue ornament, and has two storeys: the lower level holds the main ablution areas and washrooms and a small shop selling sweets and cold drinks, while the upper level contains the main prayer hall and a wide courtyard for worshippers. It originally held about 6,000 people and was enlarged in a major 2009 renovation to accommodate 12,000; it also has a hall for 500 people with an audio system and meeting rooms. The call to prayer carries to the shopping centre's plaza, and on Fridays the mosque fills with office workers and visitors. It is the nearest mosque for visitors to the Petronas Towers and Aquaria KLCC, and the one Muslim tourists most often encounter on their rounds of the city.
The mosque is open for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer and is the natural place to pray while visiting the Petronas Towers, Suria KLCC and the park; dress modestly, women should cover their hair and shoes come off inside. It is very crowded at Friday noon, so arrive early. The most beautiful time is after Maghrib, when the towers light up behind the mosque and the park fountains play. Walk from KLCC station through the park in five minutes.
