Ethnographic museum in Muscat, Oman
Bait Al Zubair, on Al Saidiya Street in Old Muscat near the Ministry of Finance, is a private museum of Omani heritage that opened its carved wooden gates in 1998, displaying the Zubair family's collections of Omani objects spanning centuries. In 1999 the building received the Sultan Qaboos Award for Architectural Excellence. The museum is spread across several separate buildings, including Bait Al Bagh, Bait Al Dalaleel, Bait Al Oud, Bait Al Nahdha and the Sarah Gallery, with thousands of pieces: a rare collection of old weapons led by silver-hilted Omani khanjars, swords and guns, traditional household items, silver jewellery, men's and women's costume from across Oman, stamps, coins and old maps. Bait Al Dalaleel, a rebuilt traditional house, runs tours showing how an Omani family lived a century ago. In the garden is a model Omani village with its falaj channel, souq and houses, which children love, plus a café and a crafts shop.
Allow one and a half to two hours, and do not miss the Bait Al Dalaleel tour. It is a perfect start to Old Muscat; walk on to Al Alam Palace and the Jalali and Mirani forts nearby. Summer heat is intense, so go in the morning. Closed on Fridays.
