Museum in Cairo, Egypt
The Royal Carriages Museum at the Citadel is a small museum inside the Citadel of Salah al-Din in Cairo, standing in front of the Suleiman Pasha Mosque in the northern part of the fortress. It opened in 1983 and displays a collection of royal horse-drawn carriages used by the Muhammad Ali dynasty, mostly dating from the 19th century, on loan from the main Royal Carriages Museum in the riverside district of Boulaq. The hall contains gilded and upholstered ceremonial and state carriages, together with harnesses and the uniforms of grooms and drivers, and gives a sense of how khedivial and royal processions moved through the streets of Cairo before the age of the motor car. It makes a short but enjoyable stop on a Citadel visit, especially for children and for anyone interested in modern Egyptian history.
The museum is included in the general Citadel ticket, so no separate admission is needed, and about 20 minutes is enough. It lies in the northern enclosure, some distance from the Muhammad Ali Mosque, so look out for it when walking towards the Suleiman Pasha Mosque and the Military Museum. The Citadel opens in the morning and gets crowded around midday, so start early and wear comfortable shoes for the stone paths and slopes. Check current opening times before you go.
