The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the largest museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation, located in Giza about two kilometres from the Pyramids, which its main facade faces directly. The project was announced in 1992, construction began in 2005 and the building was completed in 2023 at a cost of about US$1.2 billion, with soft loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency among the main sources of funding. Trial operation began in October 2024 and the official opening took place on 1 November 2025. The museum occupies a site of 500,000 square metres and holds more than 100,000 artefacts from the Predynastic period to Roman Egypt, including at least 20,000 displayed for the first time. Its centrepiece is the complete Tutankhamun collection of 5,398 objects shown together in 7,500 square metres of galleries, alongside the second solar boat of Khufu, the collection of Queen Hetepheres, mother of Khufu, the collection of Yuya and Thuya, the colossal statue of Ramesses II in the atrium and the Grand Staircase lined with royal statuary. The complex also includes temporary exhibition halls, a children's museum, large-format screens, a conservation centre, a museum garden, restaurants and shops, and was designed to receive five million visitors a year, making it one of Egypt's principal tourist destinations.
