Mountain in Saudi Arabia
Jabal Thawr is a mountain in the lower part of Makkah, south of the Misfalah district and about four kilometres from the Masjid al-Haram, rising to roughly 750 metres. Near its summit is the Cave of Thawr, where the Prophet Muhammad and his companion Abu Bakr took refuge for three nights at the start of the Hijra, the migration to Madinah, while the Quraysh searched for them. The Quran records the episode in Surat al-Tawba (9:40): God helped the Prophet "when the two were in the cave" and he told his companion, "Do not grieve; God is with us." The biographies relate that the pursuers reached the mouth of the cave but did not enter, and a popular tradition tells of a spider that spun its web across the opening so that it looked long undisturbed. Many visitors climb the mountain today to see the cave. It is a strenuous ascent over rough rocky paths, but it rewards the visitor with standing at one of the great stations of the Prophet's life and with wide views over southern Makkah. Like the rest of the city, the site is open to Muslims only.
The climb is hard, taking one to two hours on an uneven rocky path with no proper stairs, and is not suitable for the elderly, small children or anyone with joint problems. Go early in the morning or before sunset with plenty of water, proper shoes and a head covering, and avoid the midday heat. Remember that visiting the cave is not part of Hajj or Umrah; it is an optional historical visit.
