Science Museum in Makkah, Saudi Arabia
The Clock Tower Museum is an astronomy and science museum occupying the top four floors of the Makkah Royal Clock Tower, the highest point in Makkah, within the Clock Towers complex facing the Masjid al-Haram. It opened in Ramadan 1440 AH (2019) and is run by the Misk Foundation, the non-profit established by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The museum deals with astronomy, time and its measurement in Islamic heritage and modern science, with interactive displays suited to families and students, set directly behind the largest clock faces in the world. From the tower's balcony visitors look down on the Grand Mosque, the Kaaba and the mountains of Makkah from a height of nearly 600 metres, a view available nowhere else in the city. It is a quiet cultural addition to an Umrah or Hajj trip, combining science with the spiritual panorama of the Haram in one place.
Check visiting hours and how to book tickets in advance through the Misk Foundation or the Clock Towers information desks, as entry is by timed slots. The best time for the view is just before Maghrib, when worshippers fill the courtyards and the lights come on. The visit suits families and children and takes about an hour. Access is by the tower lifts from inside the complex.
