Science academy
The Georgian National Academy of Sciences is the main learned society of Georgia, known until November 1990 as the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences. It coordinates scientific research in the country and develops relations with the academies and scientific centres of other countries, with departments covering the natural sciences, the humanities and Georgian language and history. What catches the visitor's eye is its headquarters on Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi's principal street: a massive mid-20th-century building in the Soviet classical style, with colonnaded arcades and a tall tower crowned by a clock and ornament blending classical forms with traditional Georgian decoration. It is one of the avenue's most prominent and most photographed landmarks, pictured in a 2025 photograph on Wikimedia Commons. The building is a working scientific institution rather than a museum, but it is a natural stop on a walk along Rustaveli Avenue between Freedom Square, the Opera House, the Rustaveli Theatre and the National Museum.
The building is viewed from outside while strolling Rustaveli Avenue, and no regular tourist visits are organised; the best photo angle is from the opposite pavement in the late afternoon, when the sun lights the facade and tower. Combine it with the Georgian National Museum and the Opera House on the same avenue, where cafes abound. The nearest metro is Rustaveli. For prayer, head to the Juma Mosque in the Old Town, about 25 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride.
