Historic mosque in Bursa, Turkey
The Hüdavendigar Mosque, or Mosque of Murad I, in Bursa's Çekirge district, known for its hot springs, is the heart of a large complex built by the Ottoman sultan Murad I, called Hüdavendigar, sovereign lord, between 1365 and 1385, and named after him. It is one of the earliest examples of the early Ottoman style, with a reversed-T plan combining mosque and zaviye: side rooms received dervishes and travellers, and an upper floor of madrasa rooms rises above the mosque, behind a façade of alternating stone and brick courses with elegant portico arches that recall the Byzantine architecture of the region at the time. The complex also includes a madrasa and dervish lodge, the tomb of Murad I, a fountain, a soup kitchen for the poor, a hamam and a Quran school for boys. The mosque was extensively renovated after the great Bursa earthquake of 1855 and restored again in recent years.
Open outside prayer times; modest dress and headscarves for women are required. Allow thirty minutes and admire the stone façade from the garden in front. It is in Çekirge, so combine it with the nearby tomb of Murad I and a visit to the district's thermal baths.
