Educational and religious complex of buildings of Sultan Murad II in Turkey
The Muradiye Complex, the complex of Sultan Murad II, in western Bursa, is part of the Bursa UNESCO World Heritage Site. Murad II (reigned 1421 to 1451) began it after the Green Mosque was finished; the mosque came first, completed in 1426 with a simple reversed-T plan. The complex includes the Muradiye Mosque, its madrasa, bathhouse, hospice and fountain, and a large cemetery in a quiet, shady garden with twelve mausoleums, most for the sultan's relatives and members of the Ottoman family: the tomb of Murad II himself, which he asked to be left open to the sky so rain could reach his grave, the tombs of Prince Cem, Prince Mustafa son of Suleiman the Magnificent, Mahidevran Sultan, and princes Ahmed, Mahmud and others, many decorated with coloured tiles and painted ornament. The 1855 earthquake badly damaged the complex; it was restored in the late 19th century and a further restoration was completed in 2015. Today it is one of Bursa's calmest and most beautiful sights.
Entry is free according to Wikivoyage. Allow an hour to an hour and a half to wander the garden of tombs. They are burial places, so visit quietly and respectfully; some open only at set times. Modest dress is required in the mosque. The surrounding neighbourhood has lovely old Ottoman houses, so take a stroll.
