Salalah, Oman
Alleged tomb of Abrahamic prophet
The Tomb of the Prophet Ayyub stands in the village of Hayawt on Jabal al-Qar, about 25 km from Salalah in Oman's Dhofar Governorate, looking out over the coastal plain, the city and the sea beyond. Local people believe it is the burial place of Job, revered in Islam as the Prophet Ayyub and known for his patience, although many scholars hold that the graves of the prophets are not known with certainty apart from those of Muhammad and Abraham. It remains a shrine visited by locals and by people from far abroad. The shrine is a small cuboid brick building with a flat dome. The grave, about four metres long, lies in the centre under a green silk cloth. It has two prayer niches, one facing Mecca and the other facing Al-Quds, the first qibla. A side door leads to a small courtyard used as a prayer space for visitors. A mosque once stood beside the shrine but was later demolished. The winding mountain road up from Salalah is especially green in the khareef season, when mist and drizzle cover the Dhofar mountains.
It is a religious shrine: dress modestly and keep quiet; women cover their hair, and shoes come off before entering. The khareef season from July to September is the greenest time, but fog can make driving tricky, so take care. Allow an hour with the view. A small restaurant nearby has a lovely view over Salalah.
