Madaba, Jordan
The Ma'in Hot Springs also known as Hammamat Ma'in are a series of hot mineral springs and waterfalls located between Madaba and the Dead Sea in Madaba Governorate, Jordan.
Ma'in Hot Springs (Hammamat Ma'in) are a chain of natural hot springs and waterfalls in a deep valley between Madaba and the Dead Sea, 264 m below sea level and about 27 km from Madaba and 74 km south-west of Amman. The water rises from 63 springs at 45–60 °C with a similar mineral make-up rich in magnesium, calcium, potassium and sulphur, then tumbles as hot waterfalls off the rocks into basins and pools, some of them channelled for bathing, an unexpected sight: steaming water pouring down a dry desert gorge. The springs have been known for their healing qualities since antiquity, and people come today for skin and circulatory complaints and for joint, bone and muscle pain as much as for relaxation. A resort hotel with a spa offers immersion and steam treatments, and beside it a public area with waterfalls and open pools welcomes day visitors, including pools set aside for families and for women. The springs are busiest in winter, when the valley stays warm while the rest of Jordan is cold.
Go in winter, or early in the morning in other seasons; the valley is very hot in summer and the pools fill up at weekends. Bring modest swimwear and rubber sandals, since the rocks are slippery, and do not stay long in the hot water with children or anyone with heart or blood-pressure problems. Entry prices for the public area vary between sources and change, so check the price, hours and which waterfalls are open before you go. Reach it by car from Madaba or the Dead Sea; it is usually combined with Mount Nebo and Madaba in one day.
