Mosque of the Jinn — mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
The Mosque of the Jinn is a historic mosque in the Al-Ghazzah district of Mecca, near the Jannat al-Mu'alla cemetery, about 1.4 km from the Grand Mosque, and one of the oldest and most visited mosques in the city. It stands where, according to tradition, a group of jinn gathered one night to listen to the Prophet Muhammad reciting the Quran, and where he later accepted their allegiance, the event referred to in Surat al-Jinn. Its foundation dates to the early 3rd century AH. It was known as the Mosque of the Guards (Masjid al-Haras), because the head of the night watch patrolling Mecca would stop here until his guards gathered from the surrounding passes before heading back down into the city, and also as the Mosque of Allegiance (Masjid al-Bay'ah). It was rebuilt by Ibrahim Bey in 1112 AH, buried over time by floods, and renovated again several times; today it is an active mosque in a modern building, used for the five daily prayers and visited for its history.
Mecca is open to Muslims only. It is a place of worship: dress modestly and visit outside the busiest times; women use their own prayer area. It is near Al-Mu'alla, within walking distance from the north side of the Haram or a short taxi ride; avoid the hottest hours in summer.
