The Oman Oil and Gas Exhibition Centre, on Seih Al Maleh Street in Qurum, Muscat, was set up in 1995 as a gift to the nation from Petroleum Development Oman. It is an interactive journey through the story of fossil fuels in Oman: how oil and gas formed underground over millions of years, how they were discovered in the Sultanate, and how they are extracted, transported and used today. Six permanent displays use models, screens and simple hands-on experiments to explain Oman's unusual geology, exploration and drilling, the desert oil fields, pipelines and export terminals, and how oil transformed the country from the late 1960s onwards. The explanations are clear and suit students and families. Next door is the PDO Planetarium, built in 2000, with shows about astronomy and the night sky that children enjoy.
Entry is free according to Wikivoyage, and it is an air-conditioned hour out of the midday heat. It opens mornings until 15:00 and is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Ask about planetarium show times, which may need booking. It is in Qurum, near the beach and the Royal Opera House.
