Footbridge in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia
On the summit of Mount Mat Cincang on Langkawi's main island in Kedah, Malaysia, the SkyCab cable car climbs from the forested foothills to its top station, gateway to the Langkawi Sky Bridge, one of Malaysia's best-known sights. It starts at Oriental Village in the Panorama Langkawi complex near the island's west coast and rises steeply over the treetops, waterfalls and rocks that are among the oldest in South-East Asia. The Sky Bridge is a curved cable-stayed footbridge 125 metres long and about 1.8 metres wide, roughly 660 metres above sea level, hung from a single 82-metre pylon. Designed by Peter Wyss as a curve so the view shifts with every step, it was completed in 2005, closed for upgrading in 2012 and later fully reopened. From the top station you reach it by an inclined lift called SkyGlide or by a short but fairly demanding forest trail. The bridge and top station look out over the 99 islands of the Langkawi archipelago and the Andaman Sea, over ancient rainforest and the Telaga Tujuh falls, and on clear days to nearby Thai islands.
Go at opening time to avoid queues of up to two hours at peak times, and before clouds cover the summit in the afternoon. The cable car sometimes stops for wind or maintenance, so check before you go. The bridge is not for anyone afraid of heights and can be cool and windy, so bring a light jacket. Allow half a day with Oriental Village.
