Langkawi, Malaysia

Pantai Cenang is Langkawi's most popular beach and liveliest tourist area, about two kilometres of shore at the south-western tip of the island, close to Langkawi International Airport. Its fine, powdery white sand and calm, clear water in the dry season face the Andaman Sea and small islands scattered on the horizon. Langkawi was developed for tourism from the 1980s, and Cenang became its heart: along the road behind the beach are hotels and resorts at every level, restaurants serving Malaysian, seafood and international food, and gift shops, making it an easy base for first-time visitors. On the beach itself there are plenty of water activities, jet skis, parasailing and boat trips to nearby islands, including island-hopping and eagle-watching tours. Underwater World Langkawi, an aquarium, stands by the beach, a good family option on hot or rainy days. Sunset over Cenang is one of Langkawi's loveliest sights.
The beach is calmest early in the morning, and best again at sunset. The dry season from November to April is better for swimming and boat trips. Choose licensed operators and agree prices first. The sun is strong, so bring sunscreen and shade. Modest dress is appropriate away from the beach, as Langkawi is part of conservative Kedah.
