Alexandria, Egypt

Egyptian sports club
Smouha Sporting Club is Alexandria's largest club, founded on 29 December 1949 in the Smouha district east of the centre. The district takes its name from Joseph Smouha, the businessman who laid it out in the 1920s, and it became one of the city's most sought-after neighbourhoods. The club now has around 195,000 members, two branches in the city and a third in New Borg el-Arab. It began around a golf course set inside a horse-racing track, and today is a huge sports complex: an international hockey stadium, many swimming pools that host most of the governorate's swimming competitions, football pitches and running tracks, plus national equestrian and modern pentathlon events. Nationally it is known for its football team, in the Egyptian Premier League since 2010–11, runners-up in 2013–14 and Egypt Cup finalists the same year, and it also fields top-flight handball and volleyball teams.
It is for members and their guests, so it cannot be visited without an invitation. The easiest way to share the atmosphere is to watch the football team play a Premier League match; check the fixture list and venue, as the team may use different stadiums in Alexandria.
