Museum in Makkah, Saudi Arabia
The Two Holy Mosques Architecture Exhibition, also called the Museum of the Two Holy Mosques, is in the Umm al-Joud district of Makkah next to the Kiswa Factory, under the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque. It was founded in 1420 AH (1999–2000) in the reign of King Fahd bin Abdulaziz and has since become one of the most visited places in Makkah outside the Haram itself. The museum is devoted to the two holy mosques and the development of their architecture through the ages. Its seven halls hold two large scale models of the Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet's Mosque together with precious pieces: Quranic manuscripts, inscriptions, and artefacts removed from the mosques during expansions such as old doors of the Kaaba, columns, rain-spouts and hangings, as well as architectural models and rare photographs. The aim is to acquaint Muslims with the history and architecture of the two sanctuaries, and it offers a rare chance to see close up objects that were once part of the Kaaba and the Haram. It suits families, students and anyone interested in Islamic history.
The museum is outside the central Haram area in Umm al-Joud, so go by taxi or coach, ideally combined with a tour of the neighbouring Kiswa Factory. Ask about visiting hours before you go, as they change with the seasons, and allow an hour to ninety minutes. It is family-friendly, most halls are air-conditioned, and photography is allowed in most of them.
