Museum dedicated to the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum stands on the street named after the designer in Gueliz, a few steps from the Majorelle Garden, which was Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé's home in Marrakech. It opened to the public on 19 October 2017, alongside a sister museum in Paris, and was partly financed by an auction of Moroccan art held in Marrakech in 2015. Bergé said it was natural to build it in Morocco because Saint Laurent owed so much of his colour and form to the country. The building is a striking piece of architecture in itself: blocks of terracotta brick in the colour of Marrakech earth, laid to look like woven fabric, around a circular inner courtyard. In 2018 it won Wallpaper magazine's award for best new public building. The main hall shows a rotating selection of Saint Laurent's iconic garments and sketches in a dark, elegant setting that makes the colours glow, alongside a temporary exhibition hall, a research library on art, botany and Amazigh culture, and an auditorium.
According to Wikivoyage tickets must be bought online in advance and are not sold at the door; a combined ticket with the Majorelle Garden and the Berber Museum is available. Allow an hour, ideally straight after Majorelle in the morning. It is closed on Wednesdays.
